Acupuncture

Acupuncture treats a person by affecting their energy, often known as Qi or Chi (chee). This is done by stimulating points along the body's energy pathways, called meridians.

Approximately 2,000 acupuncture points are known to be related to specific functions within body, mind and spirit.

What to expect during an acupuncture treatment

Acupuncture is a careful, thoughtful process. Each session will encompass current needs as well as future goals, tailored to your well-being.

  • Initially, you will talk with your acupuncturist about how you're feeling, what you noticed since the last treatment and any new issues that need attention.

  • Next, you will sit or lie on a comfortable table, supported by pillows as necessary. Your acupuncturist may ask you to remove shoes and socks or loosen other clothing.

  • Then, your acupuncturist will read your energy pulses at your wrists, much like taking a circulation pulse.

  • Acupuncture is the single best health care treatment I've ever had to improve
my general well-being--physically and emotionally. Like an oil change does for
    my car, acupuncture keeps me
    running well.

  • Next, your acupuncturist will locate the necessary acupuncture points on your body and insert a needle into each.

  • Once all needles are inserted you'll rest in quiet or with soft music--typically a very relaxing time.

  • Lastly, your acupuncturist will remove the needles, take your energetic pulses again, and discuss your treatment.

Most acupuncture patients also enjoy a general feeling of physical and spiritual well-being, reduced stress and anxiety.

During her years of practice, Jean Kneebone has effectively treated many of these disorders, with patients from age 6 months to 93 years.
  • Clean & Painless

The needles used are sterile, pre-packaged disposable needles. They have a ball-point tip, and are about the width of a hair or two--not at all like a needle used for an injection.

Often, the patient cannot even feel a needle being inserted, other times he or she can feel it, but with no discomfort. Occasionally there is discomfort when certain points are inserted, but this discomfort is far less than any pain associated with receiving an injection or having blood drawn. (Jean Kneebone has a reputation as an exceptionally painless acupuncturist.)

Most often the necessary acupuncture points are located on arms, legs, hands or feet, but occasionally they are located on the back, torso or head, and you will have to loosen some clothing to allow treatment. Some treatments require that needles be inserted and quickly removed, other treatments require the needles to remain in place for 15 minutes or more.
